Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 12/11/2023

If you like comedy and action, you’ll enjoy our Channel Surfing TV picks.

Friday is the big day for our Channel Surfing TV picks. A family carries on after the husband and father leave in Such Brave Girls. A beloved stop-motion animated film receives a sequel in Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. Then, prepare for another action-packed mystery with a new season of Reacher.

A Family Affair

In the British comedy, Such Brave Girls, mother, Deb, and adult daughters, Josie and Billie, try to pick themselves up after their self-absorbed husband and father abandons the family. Unfortunately, they weren’t that stable when whole so the patriarch’s absence only makes them more dysfunctional. But they have their own ways of showing how much they love and care for each other.

The series is created by Kat Sadler, who also stars as Josie. It is produced by A24 and Various Artists Ltd., and directed by Simon Bird. The rest of the main cast includes Sadler’s real-life sister, Lizzie Davidson, who plays Billie, and Louise Brealey who plays Deb.

All episodes from the first season of Such Brave Girls drop Friday, December 15, on Hulu.

From Pies to Nuggets

When we last left the break out crew of Chicken Run, they literally flew the coop in a makeshift airplane escaping a violent death in a piemaking machine at the Tweedy Farm. They settled on an isolated island to live happily ever after…so we thought.

In Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, life is peaceful on the island, and Ginger and Rocky have become a couple and have a daughter named Molly. Like any youth, Molly is rebellious and finds a way off of the island, but is captured and taken to a new farm owned by a familiar villain. Now, Ginger and Rocky must lead a team to rescue their daughter before she becomes, as implied by the title, a chicken nugget.

Stream Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget beginning Friday, December 15, on Netflix.

You Don’t Mess with the Special Investigators

Reacher was a surprise hit when it premiered last year. The adaptation of the Jack Reacher novel series stayed true to the source material with some even enjoying it over the films starring Tom Cruise. The show returns for its second season following the plot of book 11, Bad Luck and Trouble.

While drifting from place to place, Reacher is sent a coded message informing him that members of his old army unit are in danger. They are being picked off one by one, and our hero partners with his surviving teammates to uncover the person responsible for the attacks.

The three-episode season two premiere of Reacher starts airing Friday, December 15, on Prime Video.
