Happy early New Year, and welcome to the final Fantastic Five of 2023! As we look back on the best comics of the past year, we shouldn’t forget about the best comics of the week. Let’s take a look!
#5: Titans: Beast World #3
Titans: Beast World #3 is another strong issue in a great event. It may have originally been shocking to picture an event where the DC Universe fights Beast Boy become one of the most engaging events in recent times, but this issue continues to cement the gravity of the story. Throughout the story, there is a continued sense of urgency which seems to further tip to the side of victory, but not for the Titans. Overall, this is another compelling story with great work from the entire creative team involved.

#4: Universal Monsters: Dracula #3
Can we keep up this novel pace into the fourth and final issue? I sure hope so, especially since there hasn’t really been a misstep yet. My only concern is that they’ve been pros at weaving this story together because there’s more threads to pull from. When they get to a place where “The End” looms like a massive wall, will things still have as much understated power? Like Renfield, I’m practically clawing at the wall to find out.

#3: Timeless #1
Timeless #1 is as epic as it comes, with a rewarding journey for an alternate version of Luke Cage to thrive and win the day. All the while, we get teases for Marvel’s 2024 projects, so by the end of the issue, you’ll be salivating in more ways than one.

#2: Duke #1
Duke #1 is one of the textbook examples of how to do a reboot. It won’t just appeal to the G.I. Joe fanatics or an agnostic like myself, but anyone who loves a good action-thriller. Williamson is slated to tackle the other side of the coin with the upcoming Cobra Commander series next month, and a small part of me can’t help but say “YO JOE!”

#1: Power Girl #4
All around, Power Girl #4 is a brilliant end and tease to the future. We’re excited to see what comes next for Power Girl, whether it’s the Streaky focused story coming up in January or her upcoming crossover with Supergirl. Despite being saddened over Pansica’s departure, I’m sure Williams and co. will continue the excellent work. Their effort on Power Girl is very well-defined thus far as they make sure that their experimentation with the character allows for a beneficial evolution to her and the people around her.
