‘Green Lantern’ #7 review

What happened to Hal Jordan, Kilowog, and Sinestro?

New year, new issue of Green Lantern! This series has been enticing readers with some interesting situations for famous Lantern characters. With this latest installment, writer Jeremy Adams teams up with guest artist Amancay Nahuelpan to give a “missing chapter” of what happened on Oa and with the United Planets. I’m sure fans will be very interested in continuing with the story after the introduction of Razer from the last issue. Charge up your ring and buckle your seatbelt for an entertaining, emotional issue.

Starting with the cover by Edwin Galmon, it is very refreshing to have a comic book cover be honest. The cover is the first interaction anyone has with the story, and this one doesn’t lie; of course, we know, SPOILERS from issue 6, that Kilowog is the one who makes the ultimate sacrifice. Yet the creative team cunningly plays the flashback to set everything up, so we believe Kilowog dies, but we don’t see the body. From last issue, we know that Hal Jordan is hanging out with a constructed version of Kilowog, but I think there is enough room for doubt. Maybe that’s why Razer is here, to give hope. Either way, it is a very emotional story and reminds readers of how far Green Lanterns will go.

Jeremy Adams does a fantastic job giving the Earth Lanterns a spot to play as they make guest appearances; fans of Guy Gardner will enjoy his bit, and it looks like it could be a fun one-shot or mini-series down the road. Amancay Nahuelpan shows his skills with all the different Lantern costumes and alien bodies to draw while also putting them in some action-packed scenes. Romulo Fajardo Jr. continues with the series, and his colors help to add to the somber feel of the gathered Lanterns; I especially like the shadowing on the characters’ faces as it livens them up as they go into the unknown with the new leadership of the United Planets. The scenes drive home the fact that everything changes here and now.

After all the changes and re-assignments occur, we get some brotherly moments between Kilowog and Jordan, making the battle more impactful. Jeremy Adams creates a situation where we understand why Jordan has been living with a construct of Kilowog, as he was Kilowog’s backup and lost him on a mission that will cut deep, probably deeper than Jordan recognizes. I feel like this gives a reason why Hal was pushing himself to be in two places at once in the previous issues. I appreciate that this provides some answers, but WOW, it also opens up some interesting questions. When you read, check out the dialogues about the new Green Lantern Power Battery with Source Energy, Emotional Spectrum Interference, and who or what destroyed the (Blue?) Power Battery? Adams continues to entertain and keeps me wanting more from this series.

Green Lantern by Jeremy Adams and company continues to be an excellent series with answers and exciting new questions that want to be explored. With this new issue, we see the fall of a favorite Lantern as we remember how dedicated these heroes are. If you haven’t put this series on your pull list, get on it, as this issue is a great starting point.

Jeremy Adams has such a fantastic grasp on dialogue that he nails it with each different Lantern
The emotional fallout as to why Jordan pushes himself and lives with a construct makes sense after knowing how their last mission went down
Razor!!
The answers lead to more questions in a fun way
Nahuelpan and Fajardo craft a simple diplomatic mission that seems simple enough then goes totally fubar and cuts deep
