‘Titans: Beast World’ #5 is a nonstop thriller

Another great issue in an exciting event.

Titans: Beast World is coming to a close, and the penultimate issue does a lot of heavy lifting on the suspense side of the story. We’ve seen the Titans play on the defense for the majority of the series, attempting to recover from the attack on humanity. However, this issue puts them on the offensive, and it’s great. Throughout the entire issue, the stakes have never felt higher, yet there’s barely any action. The strength of this story comes from Tom Taylor, Ivan Reis, and Eduardo Pansica creating a riveting issue that begins to tie up loose ends.

The issue opens up very brazenly, with Amanda Waller publicizing her plan to wipe out the beasts. It was always going to come to it, and Waller slowly left the shadows and entered the face of the public as not the hero they wanted, but the one they needed. What follows is a baffling series of events that will alter the course of the Titans forever and in more ways than one. Tom Taylor does a great job juggling the threats that all come into the fray in this issue by ensuring that the pacing is able to keep up with the intensity of the issue. More than any issue since the first in this event, Titans: Beast World #5 feels like a Titans event that will change their trajectory forever. Additionally, the cliffhanger for the issue is one that will surely leave readers eager for the series finale next week.

Ivan Reis and Eduardo Pansica flow perfectly together in this story. So seamlessly, it’s hard to tell which artist draws which distinctive page. This helps for a beautiful issue without any jarring stops or shifts as their art flows together from page to page. Similarly, the inking on this issue accomplishes the same feat. Danny Miki and Júlio Ferreira balance layers of the story very well with think inking that gives the story fepth. Additionally. Brad Anderson addes soft hues to story, which are seen from several pages having a soft undertone of blue to them. This helps carry the morbidity and intensity of the story, while also accentuating certain characters. All in all, this story is gorgeous from start to finish.

While this issue has a lot of intensity which separates it from the prior issues, a lot of this story’s strength is built off the strong storytelling from the event thus far. Each issue has its own unique twists and turns which find a way to both build off the last issue while having a higher payoff than its predecessor. Sometimes a story can have too many cliffhangers, but each of these serves an imperative role and hits the sweet spot between being engaging and memorable. Altogether, Titans: Beast World #5 is another great issue in an exciting event.
