‘Titans’ #8 review

Now that the Beast World attack is over, can the Titans show themselves as heroes after taking the fall for the attack?

We are now in a post-Beast World era for the Titans, and Tom Taylor will not let the Titans breathe as he teams up with artist Stephen Segovia to attack the team from the inside and out. This issue is an excellent wrap-up for Beast World, and if you have a friend who just read the event issues only, make sure to suggest this series, as it plays perfectly with the event’s ending. This next arc will continue with incredible fallout for some of the Titans team members. Get ready to witness the new levels of evil one member can inflict on the team. Just how far can a beast get pushed before he loses it?

Tom Taylor plays the DC Universe perfectly and knows how to juggle multiple voices, so even though this issue focuses on “Raven” and Beast Boy, there are still great moments for each character. Some of my favorite moments in this issue were Cyborg’s humor towards the team and how great of a friend he is; it makes me glad to see him back home with the Titans instead of the League. Tempest also gets a solid scene – it’s great to see him not possessed, and I hope he stays with the team as they’ll need the support.

This issue and recent events have taken quite a toll on Beast Boy, and artist Stephen Segovia captures it perfectly in reacting to an attack during a save. The Titans go to save folks from a horrible hurricane, and when Beast Boy is clearing a house, he is attacked by a person influenced by the panic and discredit given to the Titans. The way Segovia draws Beast Boy does a beautiful job of going through the emotions he would be experiencing at that moment; the rage is perfect as he gets to his feet, and the clarity overwhelming him is an excellent compliment in that scene. After Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths, I thought Beast Boy would get some moments of peace, but Tom Taylor has other thoughts in mind.

As for “Raven,” I am very excited to see what will happen to her in upcoming issues as her dark side is in the driver’s seat. The idea of Doctor Hate was a tremendous dark mirror to exist in the DC Universe but sadly cut short in the event. With the demonic half of Raven taking complete control, this could be a substantial potential tragedy for the Titans. Exploiting Raven’s personal connections to the team has so many possibilities to split the team and even cause them to not live up to being the heroic team they are. Between “Raven” as a hidden viper and Sergeant Steel as a roaring voice of mistrust towards the Titans, they will have a hard time returning to the safe and confident family of heroes they were.

Titans #8 is a great issue that keeps the momentum going forward post-Beast World, as the Titans have to deal with threats from inner and outer forces. How far can Beast Boy be pushed? What will Raven’s demonic side do to the team? Will Sgt. Steel’s attacks sway the public? The Titans were rising as the best set of Earth’s champions, and now they might not even survive as a team. The next arc goes for the foundations to destroy.
