‘Wonder Woman’ #6 is inspirational, sublime, and moving

Wonder Woman must defeat a team of her greatest foes!

It has become abundantly clear Wonder Woman under Tom King and Daniel Sampere is the ultimate underdog story. Time and time again, this series has shown the odds are against Wonder Woman, yet she persists. Wonder Woman #5 revealed all her greatest enemies are banding together to beat her, so surely she will lose in Wonder Woman #6, right? It’s out in comic shops today, so we can all see for ourselves as she fights them all in an issue that’ll have you hooting and hollering at her inability to yield.

Wonder Woman #6 opens at the Washington Monument. Steve Trevor has asked Wonder Woman to meet him there, but he can’t recall why. On the very first page, an attack has already started, detailed via captions by the new main villain, Sovereign.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So begins an epic battle as Wonder Woman fights villain after villain while the captions detail why she should lose, yet doesn’t. Once again, Tom King captures the purity of the hero, reminding us her superhuman abilities aren’t just strength and speed but also caring and hope. Time and time again, this series reminds us why Wonder Woman may be the greatest hero of them all, and it’s largely her pure goodness. It makes you not only root for her more, but downright love her.

This issue is also very good at making you believe she’s beaten. The captions help convey the megatons of force she’s taking, yet she seems to fight back. Thus, it feels earned when she somehow pulls off a recovery. In all honesty, if this issue was the main battle in a Wonder Woman movie I wouldn’t be surprised if it went down as the greatest superhero fight ever.

The scale of that hand is unreal!

The art by Daniel Sampere is incredible. The detail, the framing, and the scale are all captured masterfully. It’s not easy drawing large heroes stories tall, yet Sampere makes it look easy. Fans of Wonder Woman will adore her transformation from street clothes to super suit. It’s fun and fully utilizes stars. You’ll know what I mean when you see it. When the Washington Monument is used like a spear, man, you’ll feel it.

Tomeu Morey’s colors are also great, especially with the play of light. Morey amplifies the crumbling Washington Monument with tiny details, which must have been a pain to color (and draw, for that matter).

Something I’ve noticed with previous issues is how the captions can overtake the flow of the story. A few times, I felt like the heavy use of captions made the reading a slog, and in some cases, I’d read the captions first, then go back and look at the art or read the dialogue. Dialogue is quite light in this issue, but the captions take over way too much here and there.

Wonder Woman #6 is a shining beacon on the hill for superhero comics. This is how you make a hero empowering, truly pure good, and beloved. Wonder Woman is inspirational, sublime, and moving.
