The utter horror of Penguin shines through in Penguin #7. He’s monstrous in his actions, and he looks the part. King and Subic are crafting a definitive origin for Penguin you can’t put down.

#4: Slow Burn #5

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of February 28, 2024

Slow Burn reminded us exactly why these grounded tales often land the hardest. So while it didn’t necessarily give us what we wanted, it gave us what we needed: more stories that explore life with a truth and intensity that comfort us not with half-cocked fantasies but how even the most unforgiving of life paths are still worth following based on the sheer connective potential. It changed my brain chemistry ever so slightly, and made me think about violence, optimism, family, and the future in some compelling new ways. Forget months — it’s one of my faves of all-time, and maybe it should be yours, too.

Final Thought: As this flame burns out, it sets your very brain ablaze.

#2: Spider-Punk: Arms Race #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of February 28, 2024

Basically, this book is bringing you everything you loved about the first volume, now with even more of a community-minded focus. The DIY spirit of punk rock is alive and well in this new miniseries, with Hobie already revealing new facets of his personality to us. As this first issue reminds us, heroes aren’t just for punching — but they look cool as hell when they are. This first issue has me so excited to see how the story will develop. The scene in Earth-138 continues to grow in exciting ways, and this is just the first leg of the tour!

#1: Resurrection of Magneto #2

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of February 28, 2024

Resurrection of Magneto #2 shows that this series is not just an all-timer Storm story but for the Master of Magnetism as well. Acknowledging the strengths and the flaws of its two leads, this issue expertly balances the plot with accepting Magneto and all of the multitudes that comprise him. Do not miss out on reading this book.
