‘Wolverine’ #45 heightens the scariness of Sabretooth

Sabretooth and Kid Omega steal the show in ‘Wolverine’ #45.

The ten-part “Sabretooth War” rages on this week with part six, and Sabretooth is trying to find an edge. The story has seen Wolverine lose some of his family and he’s rushing to stop Sabretooth before he kills Laura aka Wolverine. With a lobotomized Kid Omega in hand, Sabretooth heads back to Krakoa, but what is he up to?

Wolverine #45 opens with Sabretooth walking the sandy beaches of Krakoa surrounded by Sentinels. They can’t see him thanks to a cloaking device which makes it all the more easy to find a secret lab. With Kid Omega’s head in hand, writers Victor LaValle and Benjamin Percy play up the weird relationship between the two.

In fact, Kid Omega and his interactions with Sabretooth are the best part of the issue. Sabretooth is heartless and using him, while Kid Omega is a bit of a brat and hasn’t lost his attitude. It’s incredibly tragic what Kid Omega has been reduced to, and yet he still finds ways to irritate Sabretooth.

Meanwhile, on the Maroon, the home base of the Exiles, the team is heading to Krakoa to capture Sabretooth and gain their freedom. This issue offers a nice check-in on the characters, as well as the dire end they face, but doesn’t do much more. Between them and Wolverine, the plot thickens and it’ll be interesting to see how they all factor into the battle.

Speaking of Wolverine, the art by Geoff Shaw is stunning, especially in a full-page splash of Wolverine exploding out of his jet. On the evil side of things, Shaw hammers home the danger and strength of Sabretooth. He truly is an animal and is conveyed as such when he tears open a defense system, or simply when he sneers. He may not have energy blasts or mind control powers but you will believe he’s a scary and formidable foe.

There is also a subplot involving the multiversal Sabretooths. When you wrap your head around their activities, the Exiles, and Wolverine it’s pretty obvious this story arc is living up to the title as a war really is brewing.

Expect some great moments between Sabretooth and Kid Omega in an entertaining issue of Wolverine. With so many characters to check in on the plot doesn’t progress too much, but it’s all effectively building towards a major finale.
