Some toys have so many renditions one can imagine it’s tough to figure out which one to buy. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have had new versions coming out for decades, but have they had an official toy line inspired by the comics? Shipping now from Mezco, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Deluxe Boxed Set may be the crème de la crème of TMNT toys. No joke.
The wow factor for the $400 box set is, without a doubt, real. Starting with the box, which features a slipcase cover featuring great art by Kevin Eastman and the action figures themselves bursting from the box, you also have a reverse of that design with the comics bursting from the box itself. It’s a great presentation on a fairly large box. Comics fans will appreciate this packaging.
Once you crack open the box, three trays feature the figures and many accessories. The organization is fabulous, with each Ninja Turtle given a select area and their own accessory tray. Since each Ninja Turtle has a slightly different skin color, it could get quite confusing which hand goes with which, but right out of the box it’s all well organized.
The action figures themselves are excellent. The details of the skin, shells, and armor are great. The belts on these figures also use faux leather with a nice realistic feel. The slightly different skin color makes each figure stand out and feel unique.
Each Ninja Turtle comes with two extra heads, Ninja Turtle walkie-talkies, an extra headband, additional hands (ten for Raphael, eight for Michelangelo, eight for Leonardo, and six for Donatello), and a pizza slice. There are also some clothes, a Walkman, and some throwing effects. It’s worth noting the walkie-talkies open up when you pull on one side piece, giving them a realistic function. Each Ninja Turtle also has its own stand, and there is a climbing rope for each.
The only downside to these accessories is that none come with a head without a bandana. It’s minor, but if you wanted a comprehensive set, you’d think they’d include one head for each with no bandana.
Going through each figure, Donatello gets a gizmo that straps to his hand with a stretchy material to keep it snug. He also gets his own goggles. The details on both are excellent. He also has a variety of throwing weapons and his staff.
Michelangelo gets four different nunchucks, including two nunchuck effects that look super rad. He also gets a cool hoodie and a cape. He also has some needles, which are super sharp! Beware of those.
Leonardo comes with a cape, a red sash, and throwing weapons. The sharp knuckle weapons are pretty rad too.
Raphael gets his very own trenchcoat and hat, along with billy clubs, sai, and a throwing star effect.
This is undoubtedly one of the coolest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figure sets ever made. The attention to detail on each Ninja Turtle and the bevy of accessories should please casual fans and superfans alike. My only gripe is a minor one, and I can assure you anyone who gets this as a gift or gifts it to themselves will have a huge grin on their face as they unpack the extensive box set.
