New video games worth playing for the week of 3/18/24

Check out what’s new in the world of video games this week.

Spring is almost in the air, and with it promises indie darlings and Triple A hits releasing week after week. This year has a lot to live up to compared to 2023’s best releases, but it’s off to a strong start so far. This week especially is full of bangers, with a new release for any and all types of gamers.

Let’s check out what video games are hitting storefronts this week.

Alone in the Dark (3/20)

PlatformsPC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S

The 90’s survival horror classic Alone in the Dark gets reimagined and updated over 30 years after the original game. Starring Jodie Comer and David Harbour, you’ll play as Emily Hartwood and investigator Edward Carnby as they search for the truth behind Emily’s uncle’s disappearance from Decerto Manor, an asylum. The Southern Gothic atmosphere lies heavy over the game as you never know what monsters or frights lurk behind every corner and door in the Manor.

Princess Peach: Showtime! (3/22)

Platforms: Switch

Princess Peach takes a starring role for the first time in almost 20 years in Princess Peach: Showtime! She and a group of toads attend a performance at the Sparkle Theater when Grape and the Sour Bunch decide to crash the party. Using a variety of costume changes and the powers they give her — such as Ninja Peach, Pâtissier Peach, and Swordfighter Peach — she’ll save the theater from the sour grapes. A free demo is available on the Switch’s eShop if you’d like to get a sampling.

Rise of the Ronin (3/22)

PlatformsPlayStation 5

With Rise of the Ronin, Team Ninja breaks from their strict soulslike approach of recent releases (NiohWo Long) and instead blends together SekiroAssassin’s Creed, and Ghost of Tsushima into a stellar action RPG. Set in a time when western influence began finding its way into Japan, you’ll use your trusty katana, of course, in combat, but also rifles and handguns. With the game’s story revolving around the Boshin War, the Japanese Civil War, you’ll be able to make decisions throughout and ultimately support one side or the other.

Dragon’s Dogma II (3/22)

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S

For immersive RPG fans, 2023 was the year of Baldur’s Gate 3. Might 2024 be the year of Dragon’s Dogma II? With new and more powerful hardware, it looks to build upon the systems of the first game and make the world denser and deeper. Everything you do in the game is up to you — your character’s appearance, their vocation, how you handle each situation, and even the customizable “pawns” that join your party. While you’ll have to wait until the end of the week to play Dragon’s Dogma II, you can download the character creator now and have your way with it — see if you can top this horrifying Pikachu.

Also worth checking out: Hi-Fi Rush on PS5, Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition on PC, Ikonei Island: An Earthlock Adventure, Lightyear Frontier, and Final Fantasy XIV on Xbox Series X/S.
