#5: Minor Threats: Barfly #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of July 10, 2024

The real star of the book is Nate Piekos, whose lettering gives Barfly #1 a unique visual language. As you might have guessed, Shiteater can’t really talk due to being a giant fly, so Piekos has most of his actions do the talking for him. When he leaps from wall to wall during a height, the words “Jackie Chan!” follow him, punctuated for emphasis. When an alarm goes off on his cell phone, there’s bright red letters saying “You Blew It!” It’s those little touches that make Minor Threats: Barfly #1 worth reading – and serve as an example of why this world is worth checking out for old readers and new.

Ultimates #2 reveals snapshots of how America’s history changed while the Ultimates fight to add another hero to their fold. Centered on Captain America, it’s a story that reveals an America that he detests and isn’t too far off from reality.

#3: Batman and Robin #11

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of July 10, 2024

Batman and Robin #11 is an amazing beginning to a new arc. An arc that has dinosaurs, a fight with T-Rexes, and the return of a fan-favorite villain in Bane. It’s also not without its mysteries, with how Bane is seemingly back as a pseudo-anti-hero as opposed to the capital V villain he has been previously. Oh, and also don’t forget the dinosaurs.

#2: Golgotha Motor Mountain #4

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of July 10, 2024

The finale proves what I’ve thought all along: we are not worthy of Golgotha Motor Mountain and its singular, one-of-a-kind tale about family, fate, change, and the real monsters of the world.

#1: X-Men #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of July 10, 2024

As a whole, X-Men #1 is a strong relaunch that brings readers into a new era for the X-Men. While it may be a bit familiar, I believe it does a great job of leaping over one of the hardest hurdles for the title: following up on the aftermath of the fall of Krakoa. While we’re only an issue in, it’s clear that the series is going to be balanced between being jam-packed with action and carrying a lighthearted undertone that should captivate many readers. While nothing can last forever, including the prior era of the X-Men, it seems that this series is going to take the importance of Krakoa and what it stood for to use as a moral compass to guide the team to protect mutants from experiencing loss on that level again.
