After months of speculation and rumors, Sony has finally officially announced the PlayStation 5 Pro, its mid-cycle refresh of the PS5. You can watch the presentation below:
PS5 Pro lead architect Mark Cerny delivered the presentation, stressing the “Big Three” of upgrades that make the PS5 Pro a worthy upgrade to the base model:
- Upgraded GPU: This new GPU promises to render games up to 45% faster, delivering smoother gameplay.
Advanced Ray Tracing: Improved ray tracing should allow the PS5 Pro to render ray traced effects such as dynamic lighting twice as fast as the PS5.
AI-Driven Upscaling: A machine-learning algorithm called “PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution” that should give sharper images and higher resolutions.
It all combines to essentially offer “Fidelity Mode” graphics at “Performance Mode” frame rates. Currently, most games offer a choice between “Fidelity Mode”, which emphasizes lush, dynamic environments at the cost of frame rate, or “Performance Mode”, which cuts down on the fidelity of the graphics to ensure faster frame rates. With the PS5 Pro, Sony says, gamers will no longer have to choose.
This comes at a shocking cost, though: The PS5 Pro will cost $699 USD, an increase of $300 from the base model PS5 at launch. The disc drive will also be sold separately. By comparison, the PS4 Pro launched at a price of $399, the same price the PlayStation 4 originally launched as.
PS5 Pro will launch on November 7, 2024.
