For the better part of 30 years, Violator has been a major pain in the ass for Spawn. Created by Todd McFarlane, Violator debuted in Image Comics’ Spawn #2 and quickly established himself as a worthy adversary. Over the years, this demonic prankster has done some horrible things, from tormenting Spawn about his lost life with Wanda to orchestrating Hell’s grip over Spawn and even masterminding Spawn’s temporary death in issue #100. Now, Violator: Origin #1 finally unravels how one of Hell’s most formidable demons came to be. This six-issue miniseries takes us from celestial heaven to banished on earth. With Writer Marc Andreyko and artist Piotr Kowalski at the helm, the first issue offers a glimpse of Violator’s backstory, revealing a side of him that might surprise you before he became the iconic menace we all love to hate.

In Violator: Origin #1, we learn that long before Violator was doing nightmarish things like ripping Spawn’s heart from his body, he was a celestial being known as Baziel in Heaven, B.H (or Heaven, “Before Humans”). Violator narrates the story himself and adds his dark humor and twisted charm that we’ve come to expect from the demonic creature. What I loved most about Violator: Origins in terms of story is that every choice made has long-lasting consequences, especially when we choose paths of manipulation and betrayal. Andreyko does a great job at portraying Violator’s internal struggle, showing that sometimes, we’re destined to become what we harbor deep inside.
Piotr Kowalski’s artwork and Brad Simpson’s color work create a visual spectacle that feels like a blockbuster leaping off the page. The cinematic flair is just right, especially as we witness Baziel’s heinous transformation from a heavenly being into the twisted nightmare that is Violator.
Violator: Origin #1 is an awesome start for one of the most iconic villains in the Spawn universe. It’s diabolical, clever and sets the tone Spawn fans will love. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the series, Violator: Origin #1 offers a solid backstory and a glimpse of the dark and wicked nature of Violator.
