Part science-fiction love story, part fish out of water tale, The Becomers is about two aliens who are forced to flee their dying planet. After arriving on Earth separately, the two body snatching aliens move from host to host in search of each other. The body hopping is difficult enough, but trying to live in 2020 America may be even harder.
There is a touch of the 1950s sci-fi movies that brought teenagers to drive in theaters en masse. This is not a send up of those types of movies, however. The Becomers strikes that tone with humor, charm, and a little bit of social commentary. The low-budget effects add to the fun as filmmaker Zach Clark walks the tricky line of being silly without becoming parody.
The Becomers does an excellent job of mixing its more lighthearted moments with serious themes. There is a global pandemic along with political upheaval. There is also the overall theme of humanity and all that encompasses. The film tries to do so much in an hour and half that it is unsurprising that while it does bring together plenty of elements, the whole thing does not have much to say. The nature of The Becomers prevents any real character development and the clever premise never quite reaches its apex. It still makes for a gross and enjoyable watch.
The Becomers is now available on demand.
