Welcome to a post-Halloween edition of Fantastic Five, where we shout out the best comics of the week! This week saw a perfect 10 from Image, an incredible team-up from DC, and more. Let’s take a look at the books!
The best comics of the week of October 30, 2024
#5: Uncanny Valley #6
As with all great meta stories worth a damn, Uncanny Valley is doing it the right way — with ample heart and personality. Bringing us into this story even more isn’t about showing off or mere razzle dazzle, but another layer to this book’s campaign to make us see this world in vivid, unflinching detail. We don’t have all the story yet, and things are very much just getting started (for us and for Oliver). But one thing’s clear, this was no mere “break” but the start of something even more poignant and joyous for Uncanny Valley.

#4: The Nice House by the Sea #4
The Nice House by the Sea peels back layers to a compelling onion of horror, romance, and the complicated nature of being the last humans alive. The series flirts with levels of horror from unsettling eerie to body horror at a moment’s notice, keeping you on the edge of your seat.

#3: NYX #4
NYX #4 continues to remind us why this book is one of the best X-books around. For those of us who still mourn Krakoa and loved X-Men: Red‘s blend of superheroics and building out of mutant culture, this book is for you. Prodigy’s spotlight issue finds him in a place familiar to so many, and it’s inspiring to see him fight to dream a new dream in the face of a world telling mutantkind that their only options are to regress or die. Don’t miss this book!

#2: Poison Ivy/Swamp Thing: Feral Trees #1
Perkins can draw Swamp Thing in his sleep at this point, but by no means is he coasting here. We get to see multiple Green avatars in this issue, providing us with fun updates of classic characters and even a slightly different vibe to Swampy himself. Swamp Thing’s body contains some interesting earthy tones, like leaves wilting in the cold, that give the creature an intriguing palette.

#1: Violent Flowers #2
Violent Flowers is one of the best vampire-themed books to be released in years and I’m enjoying it thoroughly so far. It sounds like when this miniseries ends, more are in the works, so hopefully we’ll get more of these characters for many years to come.
