Longlegs was one of the most surprising indie hits of 2024. Fueled by creative marketing and word of mouth, the thriller became the highest-grossing independent film of the year and Nicolas Cage’s first live action movie to make over $100 million in over a decade. In a year that was filled with memorable moments for indie cinema, the Osgood Perkins feature still managed to stand out.
Not long after the release of Longlegs, it was announced that the next movie Perkins would be working on was a Stephen King adaptation. From television to theater, King has seen his work become a part of pop culture. There have been numerous versions of the same books, sequels that had nothing to do with anything created by the author, and works that King himself wanted nothing to do with. So, while it is not surprising to see Perkins take on something from King, few would expect one of his lesser known short stories.
The Monkey has used some clever tactics since first being revealed. From posters stating, “Everyone dies and that’s fucked up.” to a festive Christmas clip, the promotion for the movie has been a mix of sick and funny. Before the full trailer releases Wednesday, January 8, Neon released a copy of the MPA report regarding the trailer. It is an example of what we can expect and yes, it’s fucked up.
