[SXSW ’25] What’s coming to South by Southwest?

South by Southwest has long been home to some of the biggest premieres of the year. This edition is no different as Another Simple Favor, The Accountant 2, and Death of a Unicorn will be screening as part of he film festival. There are some interesting titles that are flying under the radar, however. From strong genre cinema to romantic comedies, here are some movies you should make it a point to see at SXSW.

$POSITIONS

Desperate times call for drastic measures, and in today’s technological world, there are more options than ever before. Mike Alvarado is a blue collar Midwesterner who wants to save his family from poverty. After deciding to invest their savings in speculative cryptocurrencies, he develops a gambling addition. What follows is are equal doses of laughs and panic attacks.

Caper

The best thrillers take a relatable premise and dial it up to eleven. Most of us have sent an embarrassing text to the wrong person. A sext to your boss is not as common. This comedy follows a group of friends who are trying to delete a message through whatever means they have at their disposal. Over the course of their seven hour mission, exposes their fears, flaws, and misconceptions about women.

Clown in a Cornfield

Filmmaker Eli Craig (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil) is back with a killer clown horror movie. Quinn and her father have moved to the quiet town of Kettle Springs to get a fresh start on life. Unfortunately, the town has fallen on hard times after the local factory burned down. When the mysterious Frendo the clown emerges from the cornfield the help lessen the town’s burdens, things get much worse.

Hallow Road

Under the Shadow is one of the most underrated horror movies of the past ten years. Director Babak Anvari reunites with the same creative team to present a psychological thriller starring Rosamund Pike (The Wheel of Time) and Matthew Rhys (The Americans). Two parents receive a call from their teenage daughter who has hit a pedestrian. As they race to the scene of the accident, they begin to realize they may not be the only ones headed to Hallow Road.

I Really Love My Husband

A newlywed couple decides to take a tropical getaway to Panama. Unfortunately, Teresa has become disillusioned with her new husband. After meeting their charismatic rental host, she decides to make a bold proposition that will change everything – for better or worse.

O’Dessa

Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) continues to expand her resume with this interesting rock opera. O’Dessa takes place in a post apocalyptic future and follows a farm girl in search of a cherished family heirloom. When she enters a dangerous city, she finds her true love. The films also boasts a cyberpunk aesthetic and a strong cast.

Redux Redux

The same team that brought audiences the criminally overlooked The Block Island Sound latest film will be making its premiere at SXSW. A revenge tale that spans multiple parallel universes, Redux Redux is about a mother enacting vengeance for her daughter’s death. Over and over again. She succeeds in repeatedly killing the murderer, but her humanity hangs in the balance.

SXSW takes place from March 7 -15.
