The 22nd season of Top Chef began tonight taking place in our neighbor’s to the north, Canada. The reality competition will visit various areas throughout the country including Calgary, Montreal, and Prince Edward Island. However, in the premiere, we start off in Toronto.
The 15 contestants were thrust into action shortly after their plane flights. They were divided into five cars by selecting knives with three passengers each. These groupings would play an important role in the first episode.
Once they all arrived in the Top Chef kitchen, host Kristen Kish asked each competitor to grab one ingredient. For the quickfire challenge, they were then placed in teams based off of their car mates. The teams had to make a dish composed of at least six ingredients; three from the ones they chose and three of the judges choosing. Not only did the chefs have to work with people they hardly knew, but also manage a mishmash of culinary components.
Teammates became rivals in the elimination challenge. Each group of three selected a batch of ingredients to use representing a different region of Canada. They would need to incorporate at least three of those ingredients in a dish. It was then revealed that they would cook against each other. One chef from each group would be at the top and another would be up for elimination.
Familiarize yourself to each contestant and where they stand after the first week of Top Chef: Destination Canada.
