‘Fantastic Four Fanfare’ #1 is a nostalgia-rich anthology

A well-crafted tribute to the Fantastic Four legacy, elevated by top-tier talent and a variety of entertaining tones.

When it comes to synergy between films and comics, Marvel can do it like no other, which is why Fantastic Four Fanfare is a great pickup for casual and hardcore fans alike. A celebration of Fantastic Four with the return of Marvel’s Fanfare, this anthology series kicks off with greats like Mark Waid, Alan Davis, and more in three fun and lighthearted tales.

Waid and Ramon Rosanas kick things off with “You Realize, Of Course, This Means War.” This story is all about Thing’s temper and how Human Torch fuels it. It feels right at home with the classics, punched up well with full-page splash comical moments. The issue’s beauty lies in the details, like Johnny’s drawer of prank ideas, which legally proves that Human Torch is a menace. The sparring between these two brotherly teammates is always fun.

Next up is “Life’s a Gas” by Alan Davis, with colors by Matt Hollingsworth. This is as classic a story as there is, with the FF looking old-school while they investigate a strange sci-fi science problem deep in the Earth. Davis comes up with a clever twist as Human Torch can’t use his powers, but the hero ultimately makes the most significant sacrifice. Throw in a Kirby-style alien ship, and it has all the makings of a story that should have been told 60 years ago.

Andrew Wheeler and Sara Pichelli conclude this issue with a story titled “Monster Island of Love.” The story involves Human Torch joining a reality romance show, and his friends and family watch as he embarrasses himself repeatedly. There’s a villainous reason for his failings, which turns into a heartwarming look at Johnny deep down. He also makes a nice connection with a supervillain that ends in a happy ending.

Fantastic Four Fanfare #1 is a delightful, nostalgia-rich anthology that celebrates Marvel’s first family with humor, heart, and heroics. With contributions from iconic creators and a focus on accessible storytelling, it’s a feel-good read that successfully bridges the gap between longtime fans and movie-curious newcomers.

An all-star creative lineup including Mark Waid, Alan Davis, and Sara Pichelli delivers three strong stories.
Captures the charm and humor of classic Fantastic Four comics, especially in the Human Torch vs. Thing banter.
The lighter tone may not appeal to fans seeking more dramatic or continuity-driven storytelling.
