Welcome back to another edition of Fantastic Five, where we shout out the best comics of the week! This week was Absolutely Ultimate, as the Big Two’s premier lines continues to impress. Also, a beloved ’90s icon returns to take pollution down to zero. Let’s get to the books!
Best comics of the week: May 7, 2025
#5: JSA #7
All in all, JSA #7 is a solid issue that focuses more on character and their internal conflicts, but future issues could benefit to drop the rivalry between the Justice League and Justice Society, and better contextualize the rift between Hourman and Jesse Quick.

#4: Absolute Superman #7
Absolute Superman #7 transforms Brainiac into a true sci-fi horror villain with unsettling visuals and a chilling backstory, offering one of the most daring reinterpretations of the character in years. Jason Aaron and Carmine Di Giandomenico elevate a classic foe into something monstrous yet tragically complex, making this bottle episode a standout chapter in the Absolute Universe saga.

#3: Ultimate Wolverine #5
Ultimate Wolverine #5 continues to prove itself as one of the best additions to the new Ultimate Universe, flipping the script on a classic X-Men rivalry. If I wasn’t hooked by the previous issues, I definitely am now – and given how this one ends, I’m intrigued to see if Condon will bring back the Logan fans know and love, or continue to have him struggle to reclaim his identity. Either way, he’s got my attention.

#2: Batgirl #7
Batgirl #7 is one for the history books, at least as far as Lady Shiva is concerned. It attempts to do what Brombal has so far done really well in previous issues: streamline the character’s many disparate characterizations into a congruent whole that doesn’t feel like it has any intention to invalidate what came before. This Shiva builds upon not only previous versions of her story, but tries to forge a new interpretation that honors them without just reprinting those stories wholesale. I’m very interested to see how this new take will attempt to tie Cassandra’s story to her mother’s in the coming months… or maybe how it won’t. That could be equally interesting!
#1: Captain Planet #1
Captain Planet #1 shows how a reboot should be done, staying true to the original series’ core concept while making necessary updates. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the original Captain Planet, but thanks to Pepose and Casallos, I’m fully sold on this new version.
