Exclusive: T-Shirt Reveal and chat with Joshua Viola for ‘Deathgasm’ game and graphic novel

Check out Deathgasm 1.5 Kickstarter exclusive merch, details about the upcoming retro video game, and read a chat with producer Joshua Viola!

Courtesy of the Deathgasm Kickstarter, AIPT can share the clothing swag you can score if you back the project. That’s not all, we’ve got a chat with Bit Bot Media’s Joshua Viola!

The Deathgasm 1.5: Director’s Cut will serve as a prelude to the highly anticipated film, while Bit Bot, Howden’s Metalheads Inc., and FreakZone Games are joining forces to develop a retro-style 16-bit side-scrolling Deathgasm Video Game. Backers can get early access before the game is made available to the public, and physical copies will be available for PS5 exclusively through the campaign.

Fans can sign up on the Kickstarter prelaunch page to receive an email alert for both projects when the campaign launches.

Check out the shirts and get an inside look at the project below!

AIPT: What are the challenges of making a comic that works between/bridges two movies? What about any opportunities?

Joshua Viola: The challenge has been not having too much fun! As a producer on the second film and co-publisher of the graphic novel, this has been an incredible experience. I’ll be visiting the movie set next week and sharing some of the graphic novel material with the cast for the first time. I can’t wait!

AIPT: How much of this project only works because Deathgasm is very comic-esque in nature (the violence, the over-the-top-ness, etc.)?

JV: The comic book format definitely gave us the freedom to go all out with the gore and action—things that might be too offensive for film. Plus, there’s a sequence set in Hell that would require an enormous budget to film. It allowed us to explore a lot of elements Jason and Pete had in mind that just wouldn’t be possible in the movies.

AIPT: Can you talk about the creative teams across this book. What do they bring to the “Deathgasm universe” and why were they such a solid choice?

JV: Jason Howden, the creator, co-writer, and director of the films, is the main creative force behind the project—this is truly his baby. He and co-writer Peter Bune already had an established working relationship. After I connected with Jason as a producer on the sequel and he learned about Bit Bot, he asked if we’d be interested in collaborating on the graphic novel. It was a no-brainer. Peter had a relationship with artist Industrias Lamonicana. James Aquilone (my co-publisher) and I brought on colorist Zac Atkinson, letterer Jeremiah Lambert, and writer Michael Schwartz to round out the team.

AIPT: Do you have a favorite moment/scene in this book?

JV: I do, but I can’t go into too much detail or you wouldn’t be able to publish it. Let’s just say that in this universe’s version of Hell, spiders and male genitalia have merged to create something truly terrifying.

AIPT: How much does the book lead directly into the next Deathgasm film?

JV: The story delves into what happened to Brodie’s mates and shows how Medina has helped transform Deathgasm into something Brodie never could have imagined. It adds significant depth to the experience of the first film and enhances the sequel as well.

AIPT: What does Deathgasm 1.5 represent in terms of the bigger goals and plans of Bit Bot

JV: We’re also offering Deathgasm merchandise, including high-end latex masks of Aeloth, Brodie, and Zakk. Additionally, we’re developing a Deathgasm video game in partnership with FreakZone Games.

AIPT: Is there anything else we ought to know about the book, Bit Bot Media, Deathgasm, the Kickstarter campaign etc.?

JV: We’ll have lots of amazing rewards that fans of Deathgasm won’t want to miss. And if you like Deathgasm, keep an eye on Bit Bot, we have some big surprises coming this fall…
