Marvel Comics has released an unlettered preview of Captain America #2, which features the 21st Century Captain America, David Colton. The character is established in Captain America #1, which came out this week.
In Captain America #1, writer Chip Zdarsky repositions Steve Rogers’ return from the ice to reflect the modern Marvel timeline, making him even more of a “man out of time.” As Zdarsky puts it, “Back in Avengers (1963) #4… it had been eighteen years since he went into the ice. Now… it’s more like seventy years! That makes it almost a sci-fi story for Steve Rogers, which is fascinating.” This shift allows Zdarsky to explore Steve navigating a drastically different America and reassessing the country’s role in the world.
The debut issue also introduces a new character: David Colton, “a Captain America lost to time, coming to life in a post-9/11 world.” Zdarsky teases tension between Steve and this new Cap, as Colton finds himself commanding the very man he once idolized. “He’s finally meeting his hero. They say to never meet your heroes,” Zdarsky says, hinting at the emotional and ideological friction to come.
