Dan Houser, the co-founder of Rockstar Games and the creative force behind Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, is making his comics debut with American Caper, a new 12-issue crime saga from Dark Horse Comics and his new company, Absurd Ventures. The first issue hits comic shops on November 12, 2025, and a trailer offering the first look at the series is out now.
Houser is joined by longtime collaborator Lazlow, also a GTA veteran, who serves as producer and contributing writer. The series features art by Eisner Award-winner David Lapham (Stray Bullets), finishes by Chris Anderson, colors by Lee Loughridge, and letters by Nate Piekos. American Caper is edited by Shelly Bond (formerly of Vertigo) and Dark Horse Executive Editor Daniel Chabon.
Set in the chaotic town of Verona, Wyoming, American Caper follows two neighbors—a Mormon hitman and a gambling-addicted lawyer—whose lives spiral out of control thanks to a shady real estate deal. Surrounding them is a bizarre cast: a Mexican beauty queen with a haunted past, two fugitive lovers, a billionaire turned wannabe cowboy, and a revenge-driven madman. It’s part satire, part noir, and totally unhinged.
“American Caper is based on my lifelong fascination with hypocrites, sociopaths, political idiots, dysfunctional families, and violence,” said Houser. “It’s dark, vulgar, morally ambiguous—and hopefully funny. A comic for the chaotic world we live in now.”

The series promises biting commentary on modern America, from corrupt elites in the Wyoming wilderness to the cultural battlegrounds of Florida and Brooklyn. The first issue includes a main cover by Tyler Boss and variants from Simon Bisley, Martin Simmonds, Joe Quinones, and Marguerite Sauvage. Bisley also contributed original concept art for the series.
To celebrate the launch, American Caper will be spotlighted at San Diego Comic-Con, including a Sunday panel and signings with Houser’s team. Fans can also visit the Dark Horse booth (#2615) for ashcan giveaways, t-shirts, and exclusive merch.
American Caper #1 is now available to preorder for $4.99 at comic shops and will also be featured on www.absurdventures.com/americancaper.
