Hulu’s been a fixture at San Diego Comic-Con with its “Animayhem” activations, dedicated to the wide range of adult animation on the streamer. But while 2022 was fully dedicated to Futurama and 2024 saw the celebration of shows including Family Guy and American Dad!, this year King of the Hill took the limelight to celebrate the revival of Mike Judge and Greg Daniels’ hit show.
As a result, Hulu transformed a large patch of the convention center’s backlot into an installation meant to resemble Hank Hill’s hometown of Arlen, Texas – specifically, his backyard. I was among the lucky press members to get an early peek, and as always, Hulu went all out. First up were the Cowboy Boot Toss and “Alamo Pong”, which saw attendees toss rings around a cowboy boot or try to land beanbags in giant open beer cans. I won at Alamo Pong, but wasn’t so lucky with the boot toss.
Scattered throughout the activation were cardboard cutouts of Hank, his wife Peggy, and his son Bobby, as well as Hank’s friends Bill, Dale, and Boomhauer. There were even two photo ops: one for Dale’s extermination business, where you could pretend you were riding his truck, or Hank’s lawnmower. I opted for the lawn mower.
It wouldn’t be an activation without prizes and food, and the King of the Hill backyard delivered on both fronts. Upon entering, attendees were given a ticket for a free hat and for food. The hat ticket lets you customize your own trucker hat (I went with Hank’s signature “Hwat?!) and a station that serves breakfast tacos. To wash it down, attendees could have a cold can of “Alamo” water, iced tea, or iced coffee if they need the caffeine rush.
Hulu goes all out for its activation, and its King of the Hill section is no exception. I can’t wait to see what next year brings, especially if the folks at Hulu decide to bring back another fan-favorite animated series.
King of the Hill premieres on Hulu on August 14.
