‘The Ultimates’ #14 loops in some wayward youngster action

Mutant mayhem, corporate takedowns, and a surprise character reveal.

Part of the appeal of the new Ultimate Universe titles is that any given issue could drop a familiar face or Easter egg since so much of the known Marvel Universe hasn’t popped up yet. Take The Ultimates #14, which brazenly reveals two popular mutants on the cover. As the preview shows, this issue is all about the corporations reaping benefits from the evil plotting of The Maker. Also, it reveals a darker connection to mutants in this universe.

Ultimates #14 dances between two plots. One involves Captain America and Hawkeye infiltrating a Roxxon facility, and the other a meeting between Alchemax, Hammer, AIM, and Midas Inc. leadership. Writer Deniz Camp moves the plot forward nicely in the month-to-month format of time passing by, recapping what the team has been up to via the meeting. It’s a reminder that a lot is happening between issues.

What everyone will be talking about is the inclusion of a key X-Men character. I won’t name names, but she is heavily tied to Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, who give Cap and Hawkey a run for their money. Juan Frigeri draws the heck out of this fight sequence, showing that even though they’re just kids, they are incredibly powerful. The buildup to this fight is also well done, with a time-jumping montage of Hawkeye and Cap taking out guards.

Closing out the issue is the reveal of what becomes of the evil corporation heads and how influential the mutants are in the world. One can easily call this issue a win for the good guys, especially with the cliffhanger teasing that their ranks may be getting larger.

As far as the big picture, this issue offers lots of fun action while reinforcing the fact that the bad guys truly are as evil as they come. From meeting the leaders to what becomes of them, Camp and Frigeri are revealing a world that needs saving, and The Maker hasn’t even returned yet.

The Ultimates #14 continues to expand the Ultimate Universe with thrilling action, sinister corporate machinations, and a jaw-dropping mutant reveal that promises even bigger things on the horizon.

Bold mutant cameos shake up the Ultimate Universe in exciting, unexpected ways.
Tightly written dual plotlines balance corporate intrigue with superhero infiltration.
Juan Frigeri’s action sequences are dynamic, with standout moments featuring Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.
The corporate subplot, while smart, might not grip readers as strongly as the mutant action.
