John Waters dream ‘Digman!’ casting traces back to a The Lonely Island music video

Andy Samberg discusses how John Waters guest role came about on Digman!.

John Waters initially made a name for himself as a writer and director of films that usually take place in his native Baltimore. Despite being known for his work with a camera, he has also taken the occasional acting role. One of his latest appearances was on the animated series Digman! in the episode entitled “The Arky Trials.”

When we spoke with Digman! co-creator Andy Samberg last month, we also asked how Waters’s role came about. The two have worked previously on a music video for The Lonely Island, a comedy trio that Samberg is a member of.

“The character seemed perfect, but also I knew him a little bit from when he was in a Lonely Island video called “The Creep” a long time ago,” Samberg shared. “I had his information and I had bumped into him here and there. He’s always at the Spirit Awards and I’d hosted and I’ve done bits there and stuff. He was someone I knew just well enough to be like I’ll just ask him. He was great. He was great obviously. We even had him come back for a second round of stuff because we did rewrites. It was such a dream.”

This isn’t the first time Waters has done voice acting. More recently he’s appeared on animated series such as The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy and Helluva Boss. One of his more memorable roles was in The Simpsons episode “Homer’s Phobia” as new family friend John.

Don’t miss the season two finale of Digman! which airs next Wednesday, August 27, on Comedy Central.
