Tyler Mane brings outlaw grit and ancient honor to ‘The Last Spartan’

‘The Last Spartan’ also represents a fight against real-world human trafficking.

Known to audiences for larger-than-life roles like Sabretooth in X-Men and Michael Myers in Rob Zombie’s Halloween, Tyler Mane has always gravitated toward characters who balance menace with presence. But with The Last Spartan, a new graphic novel adapted from the John F. Saunders novel, Mane steps behind the scenes to co-create a story that blends outlaw biker grit, Spartan philosophy, and a real-world fight against human trafficking.

From Novel to Graphic Novel

In an interview, Mane recalls first connecting with Saunders more than a decade ago to bring The Last Spartan to the screen.

“I was drawn to the character of Frank Kane and wanted to visually bring him to life,” Mane said.

After relocating to Atlanta — the setting of Saunders’ novel — Mane noticed constant airport warnings about human trafficking. The issue became impossible to ignore.

“Atlanta is a major hub for it, and that sparked the idea of expanding Frank’s world to confront the issue head-on,” Mane said.

From there, encouragement from producer Tom DeSanto and screenwriter David Hayter led Mane to pivot the project into comics, and he was soon collaborating with legendary writer Christopher Priest.

Condensing a World of Story

The mix of biker-outlaw grit with ancient Spartan philosophy may sound unusual, but to Mane it came naturally once Priest joined the project.

“John had created such a compelling character, and Priest had so many great ideas to build on top of that,” Mane said. “Honestly, the hardest thing was condensing so much story into one graphic novel.”

The Stoic Antihero

At the center of The Last Spartan is Frank Kane, a stoic, parole-bound loner trying to do the right thing in a violent world.

Translating such a quiet figure from prose to comics required a sharp invention. Mane and Priest introduced Agent Amanda Harper, a decoy operative whose narration opens a window into Kane’s mind.

“I love exploring characters who do bad things for good reasons,” Mane said. “Frank is laser-focused on saving one girl while Harper is trying to save them all. He has to be creative to keep a promise not to kill, while Harper brings a by-the-book approach he can’t stand.”

Their resulting dynamic lets readers see Kane from the outside while testing his principles in new and dangerous ways.

A Personal Connection

When asked if he sees himself in Frank Kane, Mane let loose a hearty laugh that promised something personal.

“Just ask my wife,” Mane said. “I’ve never been great with ‘authority’ or ‘rules.’”

Like his protagonist, he admits he values solitude while holding brotherhood and family close.

“He’s caught between worlds, and I relate to the need to forge your own path,” Mane said.

Confronting Human Trafficking

As mentioned, The Last Spartan heavily involves a confrontation with human trafficking, a subject Mane admits he initially thought of as “an overseas problem.” However, research quickly revealed otherwise.

“Many of the most unbelievable moments in the book came straight from real cases,” Mane said.

Personal stories shared by fans at conventions underscored its urgency. That led Mane to donate a portion of the book’s proceeds to DeliverFund, an organization using advanced technology to help law enforcement track traffickers.

“If law enforcement is the weapon, DeliverFund is the targeting system,” Mane said. “If the book can raise awareness and help even a little, I’m proud of that.”

The Odd Couple Dynamic

Kane’s partnership with Harper adds fuel to an already-sweltering fire.

“They are opposites in almost every way,” Mane said. “Amanda can’t stand the red tape, while Frank has never been burdened by restraint. He’s a wrecking ball instead of a scalpel.”

Their push-and-pull eventually exposes the flaws and necessity of both approaches, bringing intensity and humanity to the story.

Standing Apart in the Genre

The book has already drawn comparisons to Taken, Sons of Anarchy, and The Punisher, but Mane sees The Last Spartan as carving its own niche.

“Frank’s guiding philosophy, rooted in ancient Greek ideas of omens and oracles, is unusual in this genre,” Mane said. “I see Frank as a blend of [Raymond] Reddington from The Blacklist and an older Jax from Sons of Anarchy who’s lost his club and family.”

The idea of law and lawlessness working in tandem — Harper and Kane in uneasy alliance — further sets the story apart.

Beyond the Page

For Mane, The Last Spartan is more than another action-driven comic. It’s a way to fuse gripping storytelling with social impact.

“A story can pull people into an important conversation they might otherwise avoid,” Mane said.

With DeliverFund in the fight, the work extends beyond the printed page. It’s about making a difference (even if you’re otherwise behind the times like one rugged protagonist).

“They’re both a wrecking ball and a scalpel, which makes them very Frank Kane — except maybe for the fact that Frank is still rocking 8-track [tapes] and a flip phone.”

The Last Spartan: Red Tape is available October 15 via Mane Entertainment.
