Optimus Prime gets a Megatron arm?! Skybound unleashes wild new Energon Universe reveals at NYCC 2025

The Energon Universe continues to prove itself as one of the most ambitious shared worlds in comics, blending the best of Transformers, G.I. Joe, and M.A.S.K. lore into a high-octane sci-fi crossover that’s only getting bigger.

The Energon Universe just blew the roof off New York Comic Con. During Skybound and Image Comics’ Transformers & G.I. Joe: A New Era for the Energon Universe panel, hosted in partnership with Hasbro, creators Robert Kirkman, Joshua Williamson, Dan Mora, Jorge Corona, Tom Reilly, Conor Hughes, and editor Ben Abernathy packed in an avalanche of first looks, big reveals, and surprise announcements.

The celebration kicked off with the dynamic duo of Kirkman and Mora marking the two-year anniversary of the Eisner-winning Transformers series. Fans got a first look at the fallout of Transformers #25, which introduced M.A.S.K. villain Miles Mayhem, as well as the upcoming return of Autobot powerhouse Brawn in Transformers #27. Kirkman also unveiled a jaw-dropping new Leader Scale Optimus Prime action figure, featuring Megatron’s arm fused to Prime’s body after a heroic act of sacrifice. The figure, inspired by one of the comic’s most emotional moments, is now available for pre-order on Hasbro Pulse.

Meanwhile, G.I. Joe fans were treated to major updates from writer Joshua Williamson and artist Tom Reilly, who previewed their next arc, Dreadnok War, launching in G.I. Joe #13 this November. New character designs for Ripper, Zarana, Zandar, and Torch got the crowd roaring, and Williamson confirmed the debut of Road Pig in issue #14. The team also teased a Night Force standalone in issue #18 — spotlighting Lady Jaye, Flint, Beach Head, and the fan-favorite Roadblock — before confirming that M.A.S.K. leader Matt Trakker will return in G.I. Joe #19.

Rounding out the panel, Kirkman and artist Conor Hughes dove into the Void Rivals saga, teasing the upcoming Quintesson War storyline and revealing that Destro artist Andrei Bressan will join the creative lineup. According to Kirkman, this arc will change the Sacred Ring “forever,” as new covers hinted at shocking twists and returning favorites like Skuxxoid, Wheelie, and Pythona.

All told, the Energon Universe continues to prove itself as one of the most ambitious shared worlds in comics, blending the best of Transformers, G.I. Joe, and M.A.S.K. lore into a high-octane sci-fi crossover that’s only getting bigger.
