This April, Carol Danvers is forced to confront the parts of her history she’d rather leave buried in CAPTAIN MARVEL: DARK PAST.
The new five-issue limited series brings Paul Jenkins back to Marvel following his upcoming return on The Sentry, pairing him with Lucas Werneck, one of Marvel’s Stormbreakers and a standout talent on titles like Storm and Unbreakable X-Men. Together, they promise a story that digs deep into Carol’s past and present, beginning when a long-hidden family secret is exposed. The revelation forces Carol to reexamine her days as Ms. Marvel—and not all memories are eager to stay buried, especially when they threaten everything she’s built as Captain Marvel.

Carol Danvers has saved worlds, stopped alien invasions, and even taken down gods—but a devastating attack on New York tied to a shadowy group known as DNVR cracks open a dark chapter of her family history. As questions surrounding the Danvers name mount, Carol realizes the answers may lie in an investigation she once abandoned during her time as a journalist. With lost memories from her Ms. Marvel era resurfacing, she finds herself facing one of the most personal and dangerous battles of her career.
Speaking about his return to Marvel and taking on Carol Danvers, Jenkins said, “True Believers, I’m thrilled to be doing not one but two books back at the House of Ideas. Captain Marvel is such a great character who has also appeared as Ms. Marvel, Warbird and even Binary. With such a rich and complex past, under the guidance of so many amazing and talented writers, there is a ton of material for me to mine. I hope to bring my brand of characterization and storytelling to this great character, to examine what makes Carol who she is, and perhaps even to bring out a new wrinkle or two.”
Werneck shared his excitement about illustrating the series as well, adding, “I’m very excited to be working on this project. First of all, Carol is an incredible and powerful character, with many layers and conflicts, which always presents a good challenge. Also, I’m very excited to be working with Paul Jenkins. The conversations we’ve had about the comics, the story, and Carol’s conflicts for this project have made me very enthusiastic about everything that’s to come.”
CAPTAIN MARVEL: DARK PAST #1 features a main cover by Werneck, along with a foil variant by Ejikure. The series launches this April from Marvel Comics—preorders are open now at local comic shops, with more details available on Marvel.com.
