EXCLUSIVE ‘Uncanny X-Men Annual’ #1 First Look and Mikki Kendall Interview

Hear from the annual’s co-writer and see five pages of unlettered Francesco Mortarino artwork.

Recently, X-Men Monday gave X-Fans an eXclusive look at X-Men Annual #1 (on sale March 4, 2026), via writer/artist Ryan Stegman and the issue’s lettered preview. Now, AIPT can eXclusively reveal new details about Uncanny X-Men Annual #1, on sale April 1, 2026.

Written by Gail Simone and Mikki Kendall, and illustrated by Francesco Mortarino, the annual spins out of the “Dark Artery” arc, which ran through Uncanny X-Men #13-16, and will focus on the Regulators. Who were these turn-of-the-century mutants who resided in Haven House, the current base of operations for Rogue’s X-Men team? And what role does Wolverine play in their story?

While you’ll need to read the annual for the answers to those questions, we can share a few words from Kendall, along with a five unlettered pages, courtesy of Marvel.

On writing the X-Men for the first time…

Mikki Kendall: I grew up reading X-Men and, while Storm is one of my favorites, I have always loved this universe of characters. So to get to play in the proverbial sandbox is always exciting.

On collaborating with Gail Simone…

Mikki Kendall: Gail is a riot, and we always have a good time. This is our first time co-writing, but not our first time working together, so it was reconnecting with an old friend. A little-known fact is that I started my career in comics because Gail asked me, “Do you write fiction?” and I sent her a link to one of my published short stories. I ended up writing for Swords of Sorrow, so apparently, the life lesson is to say yes even when it is something you have never done before because it can change your career in the most interesting ways.

On the hidden mutant history Simone has created and the Regulators…

Mikki Kendall: It’s funny, we had talked a lot about actual history and potential mutant history a few years ago. At the time, I thought it would be really cool if it was explored, and now I get to help build out that world. I really hope we get more from these characters and other cities at that time. It’s such a rich place to explore!
