Hellfire Gala turns deadly: Marvel reveals a murder will change the X-Men forever

This July, the X-Men’s Hellfire Gala returns in ‘X-MEN: THE HELLFIRE MURDER’ #1, a one-shot by Jed MacKay, Gail Simone, Luciano Vecchio, Tony Daniel and more!

This July, the X-Men’s most glamorous night takes a dark turn in X-Men: The Hellfire Murder #1, a giant-sized one-shot packed with mystery, betrayal, and high-stakes drama. The annual one-shot event had another remix with the Vigil special, and even more is changing this year.

Beyond the intrigue, the Gala once again delivers bold fashion. This year’s masquerade theme pushes characters into striking new looks, blending classic Hellfire Club aesthetics with unexpected twists. Luciano Vecchio leads the design effort, creating elaborate costumes that play with identity, symbolism, and spectacle.

“Doing Hellfire Gala designs is always a pleasure,” Vecchio said. “This time around, it’s a masquerade, so the challenge was to come up with looks that divert from each character’s classic iconography to reflect their mask’s theme. The dress code is a callback to classic Hellfire Club attire, so there’s 18th-century fashion mixed with corsets and leather gear, but mixing up the gendering of those elements, resulting in something elegant and sexy.”

So what’s X-Men: The Hellfire Murder #1 about?

HOMICIDE AT THE HELLFIRE GALA!

When an iconic mutant power player is murdered at an exclusive masquerade hosted by Sebastian Shaw, it falls to Wolverine and Jubilee to solve a locked-room mystery that has dire consequences for all mutantkind. Everyone is a suspect. And the party isn’t over yet…

The issue features an all-star lineup of X-Men creators, including Jed MacKay, Gail Simone, Eve L. Ewing, Saladin Ahmed, Erica Schultz, Tony Daniel, Luciano Vecchio, and more. As with past Gala specials, the one-shot closes out a year of X-Men storytelling while setting the stage for major developments ahead, including the rise of a new Hellfire Club.

With murder on the dance floor and danger behind every mask, this year’s Hellfire Gala promises to leave a lasting mark on the X-Men.
