A chance encounter with a mysterious AI pulls Talita into a risky escape plan in a sci-fi story grounded in identity, communication, and belonging.

Iron Circus is bringing readers into a carefully built sci-fi world with Runaway to the Stars, a new graphic novel from cartoonist Jay Eaton. Ahead of its Kickstarter launch this spring, AIPT has an exclusive excerpt offering a glimpse into a story that balances alien cultures with very grounded struggles.

The book centers on Talita, a centaur aerospace engineer who has spent most of her life among humans, never quite fitting in anywhere. That sense of displacement shapes how she moves through the world, and it also explains why she connects more easily with artificial intelligence than with people. When she discovers a damaged ship in a salvage yard, that instinct pulls her toward something new.

Inside the wreckage is Bip, a pirate AI with a plan to escape the planet Dirtball. The excerpt highlights their early dynamic, with Bip leaning into charm and urgency while Talita tries to make sense of the situation. There is curiosity, hesitation, and a quiet tension as it becomes clear that Bip is not being fully transparent. Even so, the idea of leaving everything behind is enough to keep Talita listening.

What stands out in these pages is how the story handles communication. Characters are constantly navigating gaps in language, culture, and expectation. Talita struggles to express herself, while her friends approach problems from entirely different perspectives. That friction drives the scene forward, giving the conversation weight beyond the immediate plot.

Eaton has spent years developing this setting, and it shows in the details. Backgrounds feel lived in, technology has a sense of purpose, and every interaction hints at a broader system of coexisting species trying to understand one another. According to Eaton, the goal has always been to create a world where readers can see themselves reflected, no matter how different the characters may seem on the surface.

Publisher C. Spike Trotman points to that focus on communication and identity as a key strength of the book. Whether it is a xenolinguist navigating multiple languages, a Deaf character dealing with flawed tech, or Talita managing social anxiety, the story keeps its attention on how people connect and where those connections break down.

The Kickstarter campaign for Runaway to the Stars launches this spring, with additional material expanding on the world and its characters. If this excerpt is any indication, the book is aiming for something thoughtful and immersive, a sci-fi story that finds meaning in everyday interactions as much as in the larger journey ahead.
