Comics legend Gerry Conway passes away at 73

Gerry Conway, co-creator of the Punisher and writer of the death of Gwen Stacy, has passed away.

Today, Marvel Comics revealed via X comics writer Gerry Conway has passed away.

Conway started in comics at the age of 16 for DC Comics on House of Secrets #81 and went on to write some of the most iconic stories in superhero comics ever. Those stories include the death of Gwen Stacy, the first appearance of the Punisher, Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man, and an eight-year run on Justice League. Co-creator of Punisher, Conway also co-created Power Girl, Vixen, Ms. Marvel, and Firestorm (the Nuclear Man).

Beyond his most famous contributions, Conway’s impact on comics stretched across decades and mediums. After becoming one of Marvel’s youngest major writers at just 19, he went on to script nearly every major Marvel title and helped shape the tone of modern superhero storytelling. His work extended well beyond comics as well, with a successful career in television writing and producing on series like Law & Order and Batman: The Animated Series. Whether redefining Spider-Man’s world or helping bridge Marvel and DC through historic crossovers, Conway’s influence can still be felt across the industry today.

AIPT would also like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and fans of Gerry Conway. May he rest in peace.
