In celebration of the 10th anniversary of Rogue One, Marvel Comics is revisiting key characters from the movie, starting with Cassian Andor. The most familiar character from the movie, Benjamin Percy and Luke Ross explore a mission that leads directly into the film. You might remember a man named Tivik. How did Cassian end up on the mission, and what happened before he ran into him?
As a lead-in to the film, Star Wars: Rogue One – Cassian Andor #1 is a nice bonus tale, almost acting like a strong deleted scene from the film. Is it necessary to the film? Not really, nor does it add a whole lot, but it does deliver a little more Cassian and a little more Kaytoo, which is more than enough for fans of these characters.
The story opens on Yavin 4, where Cassian receives orders for a mission to obtain information from Tivik. Percy does a great job through captions, capturing Cassian’s personality and character traits. He’s a nervous soldier with a history of great trauma, going on yet another mission, but will never stop until the Empire is gone for good. At the same time, Kaytoo is written perfectly, with witty banter and fun quips. The two characters are spot on, and this feels like it could easily work within the show or movie.

Can Kaytoo get his own series? Love him.

Thrown into the mix is a colorful-looking bounty hunter who works for the Empire, and a rowdy city location with plenty of stormtroopers. As far as the mission, Cassian shows he’s clever at evading detection, and must tussle in a close-quarters fight, but it’s not the most complicated of confrontations. He’s resourceful, which feels true to the character, but at the end of the day, it’s less a full-episode-level conflict to overcome and more a transitional blip in that episode.
Luke Ross is a mainstay of Star Wars comics and is exceptional at capturing likenesses. Kaytoo looks great, Cassian is spot on, as are other familiar faces. The bounty hunter is very creative, with a weird eye that puts him up there with other bounty hunter designs.
Star Wars: Rogue One – Cassian Andor #1 works well as an extra slice of the character’s story, delivering a mission that fits neatly into the film’s timeline. Benjamin Percy captures Cassian’s mindset and Kaytoo’s voice with confidence, while Luke Ross brings strong likeness work and atmosphere. The story does not add much to the larger narrative, but it succeeds as a focused character piece that fans will enjoy.
