Netflix developing ‘Barbaric’ TV series based on Vault fantasy hit by Michael Moreci and Nathan Gooden

The hit Vault Comics series heads to Netflix with a high-profile creative team, bringing Owen and his bloodthirsty axe to a global audience.

As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, Netflix is moving forward with an adaptation of Vault Comics’ fantasy hit Barbaric, which will be developed as an episodic series.

Vault Editor-in-Chief Adrian Wassel pointed to the comic’s impact since its 2021 debut, noting that it arrived at a time when fantasy comics were seen as a tough sell and quickly shifted that perception.

“Now, as Owen and Axe take to the screen, even more people get to see why Barbaric is the most important sword & sorcery series since Conan,” he said.

Vault CEO Damian Wassel said the original goal behind Barbaric was to deliver a fantasy comic that felt missing from the market. He described the upcoming adaptation as an opportunity to expand that reach, whether viewers discover the story through streaming or return to the comics.

Barbaric is co-created by writer Michael Moreci and artist Nathan Gooden, who is also a co-founder of Vault Comics. Since its launch, the series has built a strong following and is now in its fifth volume, with steady sales and critical attention over the years.

The Netflix series will be co-showrun and written by Sheldon Turner, known for Up in the Air and X-Men: First Class, alongside Robert Rovner, who previously worked on Supergirl. The executive producing team includes Jennifer Klein, Barry Jossen, Tana Jamieson, Javier Grillo-Marxuach, F.J. DeSanto, and Damian Wassel. Sam Claflin, along with Luke Carroll and Michael Stevenson, will also serve as executive producers through Soft Claw Productions.

“We’ve got a dream team putting this project together, and I couldn’t be happier—especially since Barbaric fans are the best fans in the world, and I know how much they’re going to love seeing this story brought to life in such a major way,” said series writer Michael Moreci. “This is going to be an exciting ride.”

Barbaric remains available at comic shops and bookstores for readers looking to explore the original series ahead of its move to television.
