Big news for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans this week: TMNT: Shredder is sticking around longer than expected.
Originally announced as a 12-issue series, IDW Publishing has confirmed that TMNT: Shredder will now continue through at least issue #18. The extension comes after strong sales and continued support from readers and retailers who have embraced writer Dan Watters’ dark and calculating take on Oroku Saki.
It’s a significant vote of confidence for one of the most compelling books in the current TMNT line. Since launching last year, Shredder has chronicled the villain’s methodical campaign against the E.P.F., showcasing a version of the character who is equal parts strategist, warrior, and manipulator.
To celebrate the announcement, TMNT Tuesday can exclusively reveal the covers for TMNT: Shredder #12 and #13.
The timing couldn’t be better, as issue #12 appears poised to bring the first major phase of Shredder’s war to a head.
So what’s TMNT: Shredder #12 about?
It has all been leading to this. Shredder’s plan falls into place in one epic standoff with the E.P.F.’s Director Braunze! With every single move expertly calculated, Shredder unleashes his final play in his war with the E.P.F. But he might have something besides a couple blades up his sleeve… this time he isn’t after just blood, now it’s winner take all.
For Watters, the decision to continue the series came from realizing there was still more ground to cover with the iconic villain.
“Thanks so much to everyone who’s joined Shredder on this journey into the dark side of the TMNT Universe. And we’re not done yet,” Watters shared. “We realized when we got to the end of the first year of the book that we had another story to tell… one that’ll show the Shredder in a way you’ve never seen him before.”
That last tease should immediately get longtime Turtle fans talking. Shredder has been reinvented countless times over the decades, but Watters has consistently found new angles on the character by focusing on his patience, discipline, and willingness to think several moves ahead of everyone around him.
What comes after issue #12 remains a mystery, though the extension suggests IDW sees more stories worth telling beyond the current conflict with Braunze and the E.P.F.
For readers looking to catch up, TMNT: Shredder #1-8 are available now, with issue #9 hitting comic shops on June 24. The first trade paperback collection, TMNT: Shredder Vol. 1, arrives August 5.
