DC reveals ‘The Wonder War’ Act 2 with ‘Wonder Woman’ #37 and Matriarch special

Steve Trevor and Trinity race to change the future while the Matriarch battles her way out of Hell in two key Wonder Woman releases this September.

DC is preparing to expand “The Wonder War” this September with the launch of Act 2, beginning in Wonder Woman #37 before continuing in a special annual focused on one of the storyline’s most dangerous figures.

The next chapter begins on September 16 in Wonder Woman #37 from writer Tom King and artist Daniel Sampere. The issue picks up after a devastating loss in the future, as Steve Trevor and his daughter Trinity return to the present day carrying knowledge that could alter everything.

After witnessing the threat posed by the Matriarch twenty years from now, Steve and Trinity must find Diana and convince her that a seemingly innocent child will one day become a catastrophic danger. Their warning sets the stage for the next phase of the conflict as the future collides with the present.

The issue features a main cover by Sampere along with variant covers by David Nakayama, Kyuyong Eom, and Mahmud A. Asrar.

Two weeks later, DC will explore the Matriarch’s side of the story in Wonder Woman Annual: Wonder War – The Matriarch #1. The 48-page special is written by Stephanie Williams and Leah Williams with artwork by Eduardo Pansica and Belén Ortega.

The annual follows the aftermath of the shocking events of Wonder Woman #34, as the Matriarch fights her way through Hell in an effort to return to the world of the living. Along her journey, she must cross a river filled with the souls of heroes and villains who died by her hand, forcing her to confront the consequences of her actions while racing to stop Steve and Trinity from changing history.

Stephanie Williams explained that the special explores themes running parallel to the main storyline.

“In the Matriarch Special, Leah and I are exploring a single motif: conviction versus doubt,” said Williams. “The Fates take Lyssa’s Green Lantern ring and send her alone onto the Phlegethon, the River of Fire she was warned about as a girl. This leaves her isolated, compelled to confront her own fears and uncertainties. We’re intentionally paralleling the events of ‘The Wonder War Act 2’ that begins earlier in September. While Tom and Dani fight the external war in Wonder Woman #37, Eduardo, Belén, Leah and I are following Lyssa’s internal struggle after she chooses fate over freedom.”

The annual features a main cover by Daniel Sampere and variant covers by Kyuyong Eom, Guillem March, and Leirix.
