NYCC ’19: Capcom sheds light on Project Resistance, a new Resident Evil universe game

Survival horror with friends.

Project Resistance is the newest title set in the Resident Evil Universe, but rather than churn out another single-player outing, the team at Capcom has opted for a new experience, a  4 vs. 1 asymmetrical survival horror. Producer Pete Fabiano was on had with Senior Brand Manager Mike Lunn to provide further details into the game.

Weeks ago, Capacom announced the new title but provided very little details. At today’s World of Capcom Panel, the proverbial curtain was pulled back to shed some light on the new IP. The game consists of one “Mastermind” up against four survivors. Imagine if Jigsaw got his hands on all the assets of the Umbrella Corporation, and you get the idea. Fabiano likened the Mastermind to a “Dungeon Master,” placing enemies and items inside stages, literally, for his opponents to deal with.

Fabiano revealed Project Resistance is like a Mario Maker for the sick and twisted. The Mastermind controls similar to an RTS (Real-Time Strategy) and the maker will have limitations for the sake of balancing the game. The maker will dictate locations of lights, monsters, items, other in-game assets, but will only be able to view the survivors via video feeds. Also, the Mastermind can assume control of certain enemies, but in doing so, he/she no longer has the benefit of monitoring multiple opponents at once, limiting their scope.

Despite the seemingly overwhelming odds, the survivors are more than capable of navigating the death trap set before them. The game plays off the trope of characters from all walks of life, but their respective backgrounds serve as a basis for their unique abilities. For the time being, there are four characters; Sam, Valerie, Jan, and Tyrone.

Jan has hacking abilities for example, which temporarily shuts down the Masterminds abilities. Valerie is a support type capable of healing her allies. Sam flanks his enemies with speed and agility, while Tyrone is the resident “Tank.”

The survivor’s goal is simply to escape, but the key to their survival is cooperation. Each stage is set up into three key areas. The survivors must escape each area before the timer runs out. The Mastermind must slow the survivor’s progress until time runs out. The areas widen with each round and grow increasingly more complicated.

More details about the Project Resistance will be revealed at the Tokyo Game Show next September in 2020. Close beta dates haven’t been announced, but the panel assured attendees that they would start soon. When describing his reasons for this game, Fabiano says, “we wanted to create a survival horror with multiplayer in the Resident Evil universe.” So far, so good.
