Announced in 2015 and rumored for nearly a year before that, the Final Fantasy VII Remake has had more hype behind it than almost any other video game in recent memory. The remake is a massive undertaking, considering how fondly remembered the original is — but also, how much technology has progressed since then. While the original was a blocky affair that is now charming in its simplicity, the remake aims to bring FF7 to the high standards of AAA studios in 2020.
Final Fantasy VII was originally released on January 31, 1997 for the Sony PlayStation, and has come to be known as one of the defining games of both the time period and the role-playing genre. It also helped change the course of video game history when SquareSoft decided to develop the game for Sony’s at-the-time relatively unknown console rather than for Nintendo’s console, where the Final Fantasy series had lived until then.
Final Fantasy VII Remake is set for a staggered release in the form of a series of chapters. After a number of delays, the first chapter will be available for purchase on the PlayStation 4 on April 10, 2020. Download the demo for free now!
