Sony reveals PlayStation 5 tech specs

Find out how PS5 measures up under the hood.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has finally broken their silence on the company’s next-generation console, the PlayStation 5. Wednesday afternoon during a special live-stream event on the PlayStation blog, PS5 lead system architect Mark Cerny took viewers on a deep dive into the PS5’s system architecture, hardware, and design philosophy.

A highly detailed piece by Digital Foundry was released alongside the presentation which provides an in-depth look at the next-gen console’s hardware specs.

See the full hardware specs below.

  • CPU: 8x Zen 2 Cores at 3.5GHz (variable frequency)
  • GPU: 10.28 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz (variable frequency)
  • GPU Architecture: Custom RDNA 2
  • Memory/Interface: 16GB GDDR6/256-bit
  • Memory Bandwidth: 448GB/s
  • Internal Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
  • IO Throughput: 5.5GB/s (Raw), Typical 8-9GB/s (Compressed)
  • Expandable Storage: NVMe SSD Slot
  • External Storage: USB HDD Support
  • Optical Drive: 4K UHD Blu-ray Drive

One of the primary highlights of Cerny’s presentation was the internal storage drive offered through a non-standard 825GB solid state drive which connects to the main processor via the console’s PCIe 4.0 interface. This custom drive will offer incredibly fast load times, installs, updates, and in-game tasks like generating highly detailed environments. When speaking with developers over the past several years about the future plans for Sony’s next-gen console, Cerny noted that a SSD was the number one ask from all of them.

PS5 owners will have the option to expand their system’s internal storage by purchasing off-the-shelf NVMe 4.0 M.2 SSDs and installing them in the system’s expandable storage slot. There are some caveats to be aware of — the drive must fit the console’s expandable storage bay, must meet or exceed the speed of the PS5’s internal SSD, and it must meet a set of standards which Sony will be releasing at a later date.

The PS5 will be available holiday 2020.
