Sony announces European PSN download speeds will be throttled

Sony looks to preserve internet access for the entire European community.

Sony President & CEO, Jim Ryan, announced today that the company will throttle PSN download speeds across all of Europe.

Download speeds from the Playstation Network (PSN) will be slowed as early as today. There’s no word at this time on when players can expect the limitations on download speeds to be lifted. With the current state of affairs around the globe increasing to worsen, it could be quite the wait.

The decision was made with concerns to “preserve access for the entire internet community.” With the growing number of people forced to stay at home as a preventative measure against the corona virus, forced lock-downs and individuals working from home have naturally pushed the limits of internet usage.

Sony isn’t alone in its efforts to reduce internet usage, as they are following suit after companies like YouTube and Netflix have taken similar measures. Reduced streaming quality in Europe and slower download times will become standard over the foreseeable future.

“We believe it is important to do our part to address Internet stability concerns as an unprecedented number of people are practising social distancing and are becoming more reliant on Internet access.”
