After being postponed from its May 1 premiere last month, Disney announced today that Scarlett Johanssen’s Black Widow movie will debut this fall on November 6.
The highly-anticipated spy thriller took the release date from another MCU film, The Eternals, which will now open on February 12, 2021. This move sets off a chain reaction that will affect a ton of Marvel’s Phase 4 films next year, including:
- Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings: May 7, 2021 (from February 21, 2021)
- Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: November 5, 2021 (from May 7, 2021)
- Thor: Love and Thunder: February 18, 2022 (from November 5, 2021)
Black Panther 2 retains it’s original May 8, 2022 release while Captain Marvel 2 (which had not been announced yet but was widely assumed) actually moves up three weeks from July 29, 2022, to July 8, trading dates with the fifth Indiana Jones movie.
What a mess, right?
Other Disney films receiving a new release date today include:
- Jungle Cruise: July 30, 2021 (from July 24, 2020)
- Free Guy (Ryan Reynolds comedy): December 11, 2020 (from August 3, 2020)
- The French Dispatch (Wes Anderson film): October 16, 2020 (from July 24, 2020.
Interestingly, Artemis Fowl will forgo its May 29 theatrical release entirely, instead of premiering at some point this summer on Disney+.
