Sam Raimi confirmed as director for Doctor Strange sequel

Sam Raimi returns to the Marvel Universe

In an exclusive report from Grant Hermanns of ComingSoon.net, Sam Raimi confirmed that he will be directing Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness.

The film, which is set to premiere November 5, 2021, is a sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange stand alone movie and a major part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4 slate of movies. Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his role as Stephen Strange with Elizabeth Olsen joining the cast as the Scarlet Witch. It’s also being touted by Marvel Studios as more of a horror film than any of their previous MCU installments.

The fact that the movie’s name is deliberately similar to H.P. Lovecraft’s seminal At the Mountains of Madness was already a good sign in my book. Now that Raimi is officially involved, I’m looking forward to the Doctor Strange sequel FAR more than I ever thought I would. He was making great Marvel movies before it was cool with Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 (we won’t talk about Spider-Man 3). He’s also a fantastic horror director, as evidenced by the Evil Dead franchise.

10 years ago, a gothic horror Doctor Strange film set in the MCU and directed by Sam Raimi wouldn’t have seemed possible. Now we get to see it in theaters next year.
