The best horror movies of 2020

The best horror movies of the year – non nightly news division.

Aside from Halloween, Christmas may be the best time to watch horror movies. Even though some of the best have been overlooked, there have been some great movies this year.  Horror is no different. An argument can even be made that this has been one of the best years for horror movies in quite a while. Movie Editor Nathaniel Muir and contributors Juli Cabot and Regina Chavez Muir discuss the best horror movies of 2020.

The Rental, Host, Underwater, Horse GirlUnderwater was a seriously fun watch; yes, it’s derivative of Alien, but who doesn’t love AlienThe Rental  was one of the funnier horror/thriller movies I’ve seen; the perfect millennial Airbnb nightmare. Shudder’s Host was also an unexpected gem in the found-footage genre — isolation is scary, and so is Zoom.

Teddy, The Mortuary Collection, Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on ‘The Exorcist‘ – When I think about this year’s horror movies, the word “joy” comes to mind. Teddy, directed by Ludovic and Zoran Boukherma is a comedy about a slacker turned werewolf, it’s funny with a lot of heart. Ryan Spindell’s The Mortuary Collection is the dream movie of every person who grew up loving comedy, gore, and reading Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Alexandre Phillipe’s documentary Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on the Exorcist is an intimate look at the creative process of a director who is more than willing to share with his viewers.

Anything for Jackson, Bleed With Me, Lucky – It was an especially strong year for female led genre films. Directed by Amelia Moses, Bleed With Me is a horror movie that is intimate and beautiful. Brea Grant’s Lucky (she also wrote and starred; the film was directed by Natasha Kermani of Imitation Girl fame) uses the language of horror to deal with domestic violence.
