Ubisoft today pulled back the curtain on its newest Tom Clancy game, Tom Clancy’s XDefiant. It will be a free-to-play multiplayer FPS with “precise, satisfying gunplay,” executive producer Mark Rubin said. XDefiant will feature different factures inspired by Ubisoft’s other Tom Clancy games, each with unique abilities and appearances. Players can personalize their loadouts and customize their weapons via various attachments.
XDefiant will have “a variety of competitive 6v6 arena and linear game modes, such as Domination and Escort,” according to the game’s website. Developer Ubisoft San Francisco promises to add to the game’s cast of Defiants, what the player characters are called, over time as they “[draw] on a range of characters and abilities from the Clancy universe and beyond.”
While the game looks fun, it doesn’t seem to be doing anything to truly separate itself from Call of Duty or any other FPS, in this humble writer’s opinion. XDefiant is still early in development, so hopefully Ubisoft San Francisco has time to truly make XDefiant a unique FPS experience.
Tom Clancy’s XDefiant will launch on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Signups are currently underway to participate in a closed PC playtest on August 5. More playtests for more platforms will be available “soon” and you can head here to sign up for them. If XDefiant isn’t scratching your FPS itch, check out Ubisoft’s other recently announced Tom Clancy game, Rainbow Six Extraction.
