‘Tacoma FD’ season 3 episode 7 review: A sneaky heist to throw a party

The Tacoma FD crew celebrate Andy’s ninth birthday.

The latest Tacoma FD, entitled “The Quiet Party,” involves a secret plan to throw Andy a birthday celebration at the station. The only wrinkle is the chief has a no party policy at work so the crew have to be sneaky to throw one under the boss’ nose.

The comedy is great in the episode. It might be low brow but enjoyable none the less. The backstory behind why Terry hates shindigs at the office is immature using a candle to represent a man’s anatomy but the series isn’t afraid to take it up a notch either. For his own birthday, the chief takes out his frustration on Eddie in a painful, extreme, but hilarious fashion.

In present day, it’s fun they play with Andy being a leap year baby. He’s only turning nine years old technically and they treat him like a kid. From toys as gifts to Ike dressing up as a He-Man knock off, it’s all on brand for the type of foolishness the crew on Tacoma FD get into.

The heist aspect brings some class to the childish antics. Eddie’s plan to throw an upscale black-tie event for Andy and how to trick McConky looks chic and fancy in thought. There are even sleek multicamera shots while the captain describes his elaborate plot. Although, reality turns out a little bit different. The irony is it’s Eddie who plants the idea in his friend’s head to find a new cologne thus complicating everything.

Speaking of Terry’s new cologne, it provides an opportunity for the chief and Andy to clear the air after the whole carpet incident. It’s nice to have some connections throughout Tacoma FD rather than a bunch of independent episodes. The storyline also brings in special guest, Flula Borg, who plays a scent expert whose seminar guides Terry to his unique aroma. Borg is hamming it up in the role and man do I dig his accent.

The only part “The Quiet Party” that doesn’t work is Terry’s change of heart in the end. It occurs so abruptly making it difficult to believe if it were a more sophisticated series. In addition, it’s a little corny on how he got there but a minor complaint for a show that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

The episode is an amusing take on a heist with some great, and at times immature, comedy.
