On Monday, Aaron Couch of the Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed that the indie comic Black will be adapted into a film by Studio 8 and Warner Bros. Gerard McMurray, who directed 2018’s The First Purge, has been both write and direct this one.

Black (Black Mask Studios)
The original comic was written by Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith 3 with artist by Jamal Igle and Khary Randolph. It was funded via a successful Kickstarter campaign back in 2016 and distributed through Black Mask Studios.
The story takes place in a world where only Black people have superpowers. When a kid named Kareem Jenkins miraculously survives being gunned down by the police, he finds himself in the middle of a conspiracy that’s bigger and more dangerous than he could’ve possibly imagined.
Those of us who’ve read the excellent source material know that there’s the potential for a truly fantastic movie here. Gerard McMurray expressed a similar level of excitement to the Hollywood Reporter, stating:
Black is a bold and fresh spin on the superhero genre. I fell in love with the colorful world Kwanza and Tim created in the comics, and I’m excited to bring life to a story that entertains and challenges the audience at the same time. Black does just that.
