2022 has been off to a blazing start for gamers, from major releases like Pokémon Legends: Arceus to Horizon Forbidden West to Elden Ring. May promises plenty of exciting new releases, and we’re going to start the month off with a spotlight on what’s new in indie gaming.
Let’s check out what video games are hitting storefronts this week.
Loot River (5/3)
Loot River fluidly blends Tetris and dungeon crawling into a stylish action game (yep, you read that right). You’ll move platforms across the river to navigate the procedurally generated levels and face enemies. Loot River is a roguelike, meaning each time you die the levels will reset. The pixelated art style is gorgeous and, combined with the gameplay, makes Loot River a very unique indie game.
Wildcat Gun Machine (5/4)
Chunkybox Games’ Wildcat Gun Machine invites you to “gear up, meow down, get killed, retaliate.” It’s a bullet hell dungeon crawler with graphics that remind me of my favorite childhood Cartoon Network browser games. But don’t let the cartoonish graphics fool you — there are some sick and scary enemy designs that will surely gross you out.
Trek to Yomi (5/5)
Embrace your inner swordsman when Trek to Yomi launches this week. Play as Hiroki as he defends his village against bandits. As you can assume from the title, you’ll also travel to Yomi — the land of the dead — and take on demons and the undead. The “cinematic adventure” game was heavily inspired by Japanese films of the 50s and 60s and displays those influences proudly.
