On Monday, Hasbro finally revealed the Build-A-Figure for their upcoming X-Men wave of Marvel Legends figures. As expected, it’s a founding member of the Starjammers whose name needs to be enunciated with extreme care in mixed company.
Building Ch’od will require buying all of the figures from the wave except for Cyclops. In a cruel twist of fate, you have to buy arguably the least interesting character/figure (Fang) to obtain both the head and Ch’od and his adorable pet, Cr’reee.
There’s also been a lot of criticism about this figure since it was revealed, particularly with regard to the sculpt and paint.
The sculpt criticism is mostly justified. Although this is a “bonus” figure, it’s still frustrating to see Hasbro use such an outdated mold — especially when you get a look at those awful knees in action.
“Must…find… orthopedic surgeon…”
As for the paint, I’m normally in the camp that wants a good amount of wash on anything that could be too bright. In this case, however, Ch’od looks pretty close to his original portrayal (sans the yellow detailing). I’m not saying the paint looks great, but as someone who’s complained about Marvel Legends as much as anyone over the last two years, I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as some folks are proclaiming.
If you want to own a Ch’od of your own (or just the incredible-looking new Cyclops figure) the wave will go up for preorder on Tuesday, January 10 at 1:00 PM EST at most major retailers.
