Last year was a fantastic year for video games, with releases like Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarök collecting award after award. 2023 looks to continue the trend of releasing excellent games week after week, and even the doldrums of January will see some day-one purchases come out.
Let’s check out what video games are hitting storefronts this month.
Forspoken (1/24)
Forspoken launches tomorrow, but already reactions to it are pretty… meh. Gamers have been mostly underwhelmed by the demo that’s been available for the past six weeks, and that’s after being largely unimpressed by the trailers and gameplay we’ve seen for the past year or so. Personally, I enjoyed the demo and wouldn’t mind exploring more of the game, but Forspoken is still firmly in the “wait for reviews” category for me. If you decide to check it out you’ll journey with Frey to the dark fantasy land of Athia. There she’ll learn to use magic with the aid of her sentient arm band Cuff, get swept up in battling tyrannical rulers, and rattle off more quips than Tony Stark in an MCU flick.
Hitman: World of Assassination
Hitman: World of Assassination isn’t a new game per se, but a rebranding of the Hitman trilogy that started in 2015. Hitman 3 is being retitled as Hitman: World of Assassination and will include the first two games in the trilogy. Hitman and Hitman 2 will no longer be sold on digital storefronts, but players who own them will still be able to play them. Players already owning Hitman 3 will receive a free upgrade to the new version of the trilogy, which will include all the DLC previously released for the first two games. Freelancer, a new game mode for World of Assassination, launches the same day. You can read more about the rebranding and changes over on Io Interactive’s blog.
Dead Space (1/27)
The remake of Dead Space returns the dismemberment-focused gameplay of the original that fans knew and loved. It’s been remade with attention and care by Star Wars Squadrons developer EA Motive for next-gen hardware and, based on the trailers, looks and sounds absolutely gorgeous. The story will be the same as the original, with engineer Isaac Clarke fighting his way through a necromorph-infested ship in search of his girlfriend. This time, though, Clarke will be fully voiced by Gunner Wright like in Dead Space 2 and 3. Speaking of the sequels–anyone who pre-orders the remake on Steam will get a copy of Dead Space 2 for free.
